Disclaimer: The device was sent to me at no cost so keep that in mind.
The Yocan Evolve Plus XL is the most recent product from Yocan. It is in essence, a blown-up version of the Evolve Plus as you might expect. It’s very similar to the Evolve Plus at first glance, except it’s a bit fatter and has a couple extra features.
Included with the pen was the charging cable, a half decent dab tool, a lanyard, and an extra coil. The lanyard attaches to a removable ring that you can remove if you wish to.
It uses a 1400 mAh battery and charges with a standard micro usb cable. One of the improvements over the Plus is the magnetic connection between the battery and the mouthpiece so you can easily take it off to reload the device. It also features an adjustable airflow intake so you can hit it how you like.
On the bottom, same as the Plus, is a compartment to store your concentrates, except this time the whole jar comes off lid and all and has two separate compartments inside.
The most important part however, is the coil inside and how well it works with the battery. As you might have spotted from the photos so far, it uses a quad quartz coil combination. Initially, this did worry me, as I’m not a big fan of quartz. I’m more of a ceramic donut person and as of now, Yocan doesn’t have any plans for ceramic coils for this device.
Loading the device seems like a bit of a task if you do it the way I did. You can either put a big glob of shatter in the middle, or load it like I did, putting a few small balls on the coils. It does seem to hold quite a bit of shatter as the air holes are pretty high up. Hitting the device is as easy as any device though, just click the button and go.
This thing is capable of putting out some serious clouds, but it hits pretty damn hot. I can’t take hits any bigger than other wax pens just because of how hot it feels in my throat. The coils get hot really fast as well, so make sure to pulse the button or you’ll be burning your oil. Flavour-wise, it’s okay. The first hit came off as tasty, as you would expect from any fresh coil, but subsequent hits on the device tasted slightly burnt. The oil seems to pool below the coils and that causes the coils to get red hot within a few seconds if you’re not careful. This could be fixed by loading a larger amount of concentrate but I didn’t want to just add a huge chunk my first time with the device.
This is probably a good device if you like quartz coils and want something that can hold a lot of concentrate at once (especially with the built in jar that holds about 1g) however it’s not my personal favourite as I still prefer ceramic donuts and loading smaller amounts. Despite that, the clouds it can put out hit me like a horse in a way that my regular pen can’t match, but not quite as hard as an actual rig.
Overall I give the Yocan Evolve Plus XL a passing grade. It does what it sets out to do in a way that’s pretty unique with the magnetic mouthpiece, built-in jar, and 4-coil system. And while it’s not for me personally, someone who likes big hits and carrying a lot of concentrate in the pen would probably like this pen. If they come out with a ceramic donut coil for this pen then I would definitely come back to it and make it my regular pen.
Pros:
- Powerful hits
- Magnetic mouthpiece
- Variable airflow
- Built in storage system
- Good battery
Cons:
- Need to load more concentrate than most pens.
- Concentrate gets burned unless the device is fully loaded
